Abstract

|
Cellulose acetate electrophoresis hart been widely used for the identification of
abnormalhemoglobins.
Of 61 consecutive series of cord blood (ED7A) specimens, abnormal band which
amounted to 0. 5% to 38. 5% of the total hemoglobin was found in 59 cases. The
abnormal band characteristically appeared cathodally next to Hb F.
The artefactual bands disappeared with addition of 2% KCN to hemolysate, We
observed that the abnormal dana had electrophoretic mobility identical to that of
artefactual band formed in Vitro by addition Of K3 Fe(CN)6.
Because the abnormal band was not found on fresh cord specimens, we interpreted it as
a artefactual methemoglotin band derived from Hb F and partly from Hb A during
storage of specimens.
